Why I built Zen+ Health for teams like mine

I was leading a remote engineering team and looked fine on the surface. More meetings. More responsibility. More pressure quietly accumulating underneath.

One day, wound up enough to join a Zoom call from my sofa, I heard myself say "I'm not the right person for this job." That moment stayed with me because nothing in the system had spotted what was building before it got there.

What followed was cancer, chemotherapy, and a long road back. When I returned to work, the same patterns started creeping in. I didn't want a system that let HR watch people more closely. I wanted something that could support people earlier, privately, and still give employers the aggregate signal to act before overload turned into absence, attrition, or burnout.

Founder perspective

Built from lived experience of hidden overload, then shaped for employers who need better signal without breaking employee trust.

The Setup

Remote Leadership

Leading a team of ten developers from home. Coaching, unblocking, improving, giving credit. Remote work meant more meetings, more responsibility, and more pressure absorbed quietly. I took it all on without noticing how much it was accumulating.

The Crisis

Late 2020

The Breaking Point

I was asked to drive a major organisational change. Stress built fast. I paced, slept badly, and carried it alone underneath while staying competent on the surface.

Then came the sofa Zoom call. Too wound up to sit at my desk, I joined from the sofa and heard myself say "I'm not the right person for this job." Nothing dramatic happened externally, but internally something had already gone too far.

The Discovery

Still pushing through stress, I kept coming back to the same thought: there had to be a better way to spot pressure early. I started the research application for what would become Zen+ Health. Then I found a lump.

The Pause

2023-2024

Treatment

Testicular cancer diagnosis. Surgery in December. By January it had spread to my lungs, Stage 3A. Chemotherapy from January to April with complications and hospital stays. Life went from engineering leader to patient.

Chemo fog slowed everything down. Energy, concentration, memory. Small things still helped: music, meditation, thoughtful support. But nothing connected the dots between stress, energy, calendar load, and recovery in the background.

The Clarity

Recovery

I went back to work in small increments. At first it felt like being dropped into my own life as a guest. As hours increased, the old patterns returned too: more meetings, more stress, same system.

This time I could see it clearly. I didn't just want to cope better myself. I wanted to stop good people getting that overwhelmed in the first place.

The Mission

2025

The Beginning

During recovery I had enforced slowness, patchy energy, and the same instinct I've always had: build the thing I need. AI had moved fast while I was away, and suddenly a system that could learn patterns and respond in real time looked viable.

So I registered Zen+ Health, left my role, and committed full time.

Why employers need something different

Modern leadership has a major blind spot

In a hybrid world, traditional engagement surveys are retrospective. We need real-time signals that protect the human without invading the professional.

Invisible strain

Good people often keep performing while pressure is already becoming harmful underneath.

Delayed signal

By the time absence, burnout, or attrition show up, the intervention window is already narrower.

Non-scalable support

Managers are asked to support wellbeing, but constant check-ins do not scale across teams and functions.

Surveillance risk

If support feels like monitoring, people stop trusting it. Once trust is gone, engagement goes with it.

Our core principles

How we build is the direct answer to the story's pain points

These four pillars guide every feature we ship.

rocket_launch

Proactive, not reactive

Support arrives before pressure peaks, not after someone has already tipped into crisis or absence.

lock_open

Private by design

Individual reflections stay with the individual. Employers only get anonymised, aggregated patterns they can act on responsibly.

calendar_today

Built for the workday

Short, practical support that fits around meetings, workload spikes, and normal operating reality.

query_stats

Measurable at team level

Leaders get meaningful trend visibility so wellbeing becomes measurable without turning into individual monitoring.
